Custom machined components
Spline Machining
Services
Custom internal and external splines for shafts, hubs, sleeves, and couplings. Send your drawings for prototype, replacement-part, or small-batch machining.

- Internal and external splines
- Involute, straight-sided and selected special profiles
- Spline cutting with turning, milling and finishing
Spline Machining Capabilities
The machining route is confirmed after reviewing geometry, material, access and quantity.

External Splines
Splined shafts and drive members, with the tooth profile and fit defined by your drawing.

Internal Splines
Hubs, sleeves and couplings. Profile geometry and tool access guide the machining route.

Complete Splined Shafts
Spline teeth coordinated with journals, shoulders, threads, keyways and mounting features.
Spline Drawing Requirements
Define the spline profile and mating fit together. Include the governing standard and identify the datums used to control the complete component.
Spline Profiles and Fit Requirements
Involute splines
State the governing standard, tooth data, pressure angle and fit class.
Straight-sided splines
Define tooth width, space width, diameters, effective length and mating fit.
Serrations and special profiles
Provide the complete profile definition. Tool access, material and quantity require review.
01
Spline profile and tooth data
Specify tooth count, module or diametral pitch, pressure angle or tooth form, and major and minor diameters.
02
Fit and mating-part requirements
State the fit class, effective spline length, and whether the joint is fixed or sliding. Include mating-part data and backlash requirements.
03
Datums, journals and bores
Identify runout, alignment, bearing-seat relationships and other critical dimensions relative to the controlled datums.
04
Material and final condition
Include material grade, heat treatment, hardness, finish, inspection requirements and drawing revision.
Spline Manufacturing Process
01
Drawing & fit review
Review the spline specification, mating relationship, material, quantity and inspection plan.
02
Blank & spline machining
Establish reference features, then select hobbing, shaping, broaching, milling or EDM as appropriate.
03
Treatment & finishing
Coordinate specified heat treatment, finishing and any necessary post-treatment operations.
04
Inspection & delivery
Verify agreed spline features and their relationship to journals, bores and faces before delivery.

Spline Machining Materials and Finishes
Specify the material grade and required final condition with your drawing.
| Material group | Options and requirements |
|---|---|
| Carbon & alloy steels | For shafts, drive hubs and couplings; specify strength, hardness and heat-treatment condition. |
| Stainless steels | For corrosion-resistant components; define the grade, fit and surface requirements. |
| Tool & bearing steels | For selected wear-critical parts; review final hardness and finishing allowance. |
| Aluminum, brass & bronze | Drawing-defined grades for lightweight or selected mating components. |
| Engineering plastics | Selected low-noise or lightweight components; review temperature, load and dimensional stability. |
Final condition and fitSpecify heat treatment, hardness, case requirements, coating and any post-treatment dimensional acceptance criteria. Finishing allowances must be considered when defining the spline fit.
Spline Inspection and Quality Control
Agree on the inspection scope and acceptance criteria before production.
Tooth and space dimensions
Define tooth thickness, space width and any span or pin measurements on the drawing.
Runout and alignment
Relate the spline to the controlled bores, journals, faces and bearing seats.
Functional fit checks
Agree on go/no-go gauges, mating gauges or customer-supplied masters where required.
Hardness and inspection records
Specify hardness, surface finish, first-article checks and required documentation before quotation.

Prototype and Small-Batch Splined Parts
Prototype spline assemblies
Provide drawings for the shaft and mating component, with the fit your testing needs to evaluate.
Replacement shafts and hubs
Send controlled drawings and mating-part data for feasibility review of legacy components.
Repeat small batches
Identify the approved revision, material condition and inspection requirements for repeat orders.
Spline Machining FAQ
Can you machine both internal and external splines?
Yes. The process is selected after reviewing the profile, size, material, tool access, accuracy and quantity.
Which spline standards can you review?
Send the governing DIN, ANSI, ISO or other specified standard, along with the profile and fit class. Exact capability is confirmed against the drawing.
Can you manufacture mating spline components?
Send drawings for both parts. Identify fixed or sliding engagement, required fit, backlash and assembly conditions.
Can you machine hardened splines?
Selected hardened materials and post-heat-treatment operations can be reviewed. Feasibility depends on hardness, geometry and acceptance criteria.
What information is needed for a spline quote?
Provide the CAD model, controlled drawing, spline specification, material, heat treatment, quantity, delivery date and inspection requirements.
