Thread Machining Processes

The machining route is confirmed after reviewing geometry, material, access and quantity.

01

Thread Milling

Internal or external threads where component geometry, tool access and dimensional control suit a milling route.

02

Thread Turning

Threads on rotational components, coordinated with bores, shoulders, sealing faces and other turned features.

03

CNC Tapping

Standard internal threads in housings, plates and brackets, with hole depth and chip clearance considered.

Thread Drawing Requirements

A nominal thread size alone is not enough. Define the thread standard, fit, usable depth and final condition so the part can be quoted and inspected correctly.

Standard and Custom Thread Types

Metric, UNC and UNF

Include the complete designation, pitch and required tolerance class.

NPT, BSPP and BSPT

Identify the exact pipe-thread specification and required acceptance criteria.

Left-hand and custom threads

Provide direction, profile, pitch, starts and dimensional requirements for feasibility review.

01

Thread designation and fit

Specify the governing standard, diameter, pitch or threads per inch, tolerance class, and right- or left-hand direction.

02

Thread length and hole depth

Distinguish usable full-thread length from total hole depth. Show blind holes, reliefs, runout and entry chamfers.

03

Datums and surrounding features

Identify alignment to bores, sealing faces and adjacent diameters, together with wall thickness and access limits.

04

Finish and inspection requirements

State material, coating or treatment, masking, post-finish fit and the required gauging or documentation.

Thread Manufacturing Process

01

Specification review

Check the thread designation, usable length, surrounding geometry and final acceptance requirements.

02

Part & thread machining

Machine the component and select thread milling, turning or tapping to suit the feature.

03

Deburring & finishing

Control burrs, entry features and specified finishing, including masking or coating allowance.

04

Gauging & delivery

Check threads and related dimensions using the agreed inspection plan and documentation.

Thread Machining Materials and Finishes

Specify the material grade and required final condition with your drawing.

Material groupOptions and requirements
Aluminum6061, 7075 and other specified grades for housings, fittings and lightweight components.
Stainless steel304, 316, 17-4 PH and drawing-specified grades; review thread geometry and machining access.
Carbon & alloy steel1045, 4140, 4340 and specified grades for shafts and mechanical components.
Titanium, brass & copperSelected drawing-defined grades, subject to geometry and process review.
Engineering plasticsPEEK, POM, nylon and other selected polymers; consider wall thickness and engagement requirements.

Final condition and fitAnodizing, plating and other coatings can change thread fit. Specify coating thickness, masking and whether acceptance applies before or after finishing.

Thread Inspection and Quality Control

Agree on the inspection scope and acceptance criteria before production.

Internal thread gauging

Thread plug gauges and go/no-go checks as required by the specified thread and acceptance criteria.

External thread gauging

Thread ring gauges or selected pitch-diameter measurements according to the inspection plan.

Thread profile and geometry

Selected optical checks or measurement over wires where appropriate to the specified feature.

Related dimensions and records

Verify bores, faces and datum relationships; agree on first-article reports and documentation before production.

Prototype and Small-Batch Threaded Parts

Prototype threaded parts

Custom housings, connectors and adapters for engineering validation and assembly trials.

Replacement components

Drawing-defined shafts, fittings and sleeves incorporating controlled threaded interfaces.

Repeat small batches

Maintain approved revisions, material specifications and inspection requirements for subsequent orders.

CNC Thread Machining FAQ

Should my part use thread milling or tapping?

Both can produce suitable internal threads. The route depends on thread size, material, hole depth, tool access, quantity and inspection requirements.

Can you machine left-hand and custom threads?

Yes, selected left-hand and drawing-defined threads can be reviewed. Provide the complete designation and profile rather than only a nominal diameter.

Can you machine threads in blind holes?

Yes, subject to access and geometry. Show usable full-thread length separately from total hole depth and allow space for the selected tool.

Can threaded parts be anodized or plated?

Yes. Coating can affect fit, so define masking, thickness and post-finish thread acceptance in the drawing or RFQ.

Do you supply standard catalog screws and bolts?

This service focuses on custom CNC-machined components with threaded features, including shafts, housings, adapters and fittings.

What should I send for a thread machining quote?

Send a CAD model and controlled drawing showing thread specifications, critical dimensions, material, finish, quantity and inspection requirements.
